I found myself ‘Social Media Challenged’ in 2010 as I started diving into the social media mania, mainly to support my entrepreneurial husband with his many endeavors. Looking to free up some of his evening and weekend time to spend with me and the kids, I offered to jump in and help. I had a personal Facebook profile with 60 friends. I posted updates once a day and read my friends’ updates, posts and comments with the joy of a gleeful, yet distant voyeur.
What followed can only be described as a whirlwind of discoveries, accidental a-ha moments and a learning curve from here to the moon. Several months in, I couldn’t believe how much I had learned and how many mistakes I had made. My clients benefit from that learning curve, and I give them that vital initial knowledge that for me was so very hard earned, ensuring they start on their own social media projects on the right path from the get go.
As the social media manager of my own company, I find myself frequently talking and walking business owners and friends alike through the initial steps of social media set up and management. Explaining and helping them understand this is important. Even though they might delegate some or all of their social media to a social media management company, it is crucial for them to understand how the different platforms work before they engage in social media marketing.
